Two days later, Jacob met David at the diner for breakfast. Over pancakes, he told David he’d broken up with Claire.

“Maybe I should ask her out,” David said.

“That’s not a good idea.”

“Why? You don’t think she would have me?”

“I have no idea, but if she did go out with you, and things went sideways, she turns into a terror.”

“What happened?”

Jacob gave him a cleaned up version of Claire’s tantrum.

David stared at him, his fork poised midway between his plate and his mouth. A piece of pancake began losing its grip on the fork. A moment later, the pancake tore and fell into a puddle of syrup. “Do you think she’ll sabotage your job? Or mine?”

Jacob shook his head. “Henry has a lot of respect for me.” He was confident, more than he sounded because he didn’t want to explain why he was so certain. There was no way Henry would risk the damage Jacob could do if they had a falling out. Even aside from that, Henry relied on him for errands that were too sensitive for others. Jacob still handled the bank deposits for the legitimate businesses. No, he was confident Claire could spin into a frenzy, and Henry would simply turn away.

“I don’t know. That’s a pretty definite threat,” David said.

“Don’t worry about it.”

“Maybe you should be more worried. Maybe you should be thinking about how to get the upper hand, make the first move.”

“What kind of move? What are you talking about?”

“Solidify our positions. Maybe tell Henry she needs to be locked up.”

“It was a temper tantrum, she’s not insane.”

“It sounds pretty crazy to me,” David said. He cut a wedge out of the pancakes and stabbed his fork into the bite-sized stack.

“She was emotional, that’s all.”

“Are you sure?”

Jacob nodded. He was queasy from too much syrup and butter. He pushed his plate away.

“Lost your appetite?”

“It’s a lot of food.”

David shoved a forkful of pancakes into his mouth. “We need a plan.” The fog was burning off, and the sun suddenly shone through the window, surrounding David’s face and upper body with blinding light. “I’m serious. We need to protect our interests.”

“Our interests?”

“Yes.”

David seemed unaware of the sarcastic tone. He continued shoveling sopping pancakes into his mouth. After a moment, he chewed furiously, swallowed, and put down his fork. “She threatened you. She has the inside track. She can talk to Mrs. King. She has Henry’s attention at dinner every night of the week. She can even utilize Mary.”

“How would she utilize Mary? You’re the one who sounds crazy.” Jacob laughed.

“I don’t know. Women have ways. They can be very crafty. You should know that.”

“Not all women are the same.”

“In that way, yes they are. Just like all men are saps for a pretty girl.”

“That’s completely different.”

“Trust me on this.”

As far as Jacob knew, David hadn’t had more than one or two girls, with long gaps in between where he didn’t even ask a girl out. How could he possibly believe he was an expert on all women? As if you only had to read a book and you knew how they operated.
